All over the world, when the docuseries SEDUCED: Inside the NXIVM Cult, airs, Twitter becomes a sea of people who would “NEVER join a cult” and would “NEVER fall for any type of coercive control.”
I can always tell when an episode is airing. I follow the hashtags for the show, and those nights bring a new influx of “I can’t believe they fell for any of that” or “There’s no way in hell I would ever wear a sash.” The same people who stand on the edge of the Grand Canyon and feel that nothing could be powerful enough to have carved such a wonder.
The process of un-indoctrinating myself was a deep maze of therapy, education, time and a myriad of discussions with people who have had similar experiences as being parts of cults and in coercive relationships.
Im here because you exploited me, you coerced and manipulated me.

As a life long seeker, I have spent many years traveling to far corners of the globe to work with healers, gurus, and teachers in search of my clarity, my confidence, and my purpose- the GLORIOUS self that my granny saw in me. Often I felt lost, alone, and confused. At one point, I even found myself an unsuspecting member of NXIVM, a high demand organization (e.g., cult).
I was first recruited into ESP through an introduction meeting held Santa Monica, CA. After that I took a five day intensive in Los Angeles in 2011. I was 19 years old.
My mission is to tell the world that every single experience of people who were in any cult, high control group be it NXIVM, or the Children of God matters, whatever form it takes. Most people in cults are either sexually abused, financially enslaved, or emotionally coerced. Whatever our experience was, it takes years to deprogram and unlearn, even if there is no physical mark.
Poverty is horrific. But a kid usually doesn’t know any better. Until they get into upper grades at school and visit other houses. And eventually they learn of a life beyond this and the “American Dream” where they can do what they want, when they want, free from limitations, and be rich! Unless they join a cult…
Hi I’m Kelly Thiel. I live in the OC, I do pilates 3 days a week. I practice yoga (on and off the mat).
